As a Nework Admin type, should I report to authorities what I've found on the director of the company's work computer in a "shared to the company network folder?" If not, why? Yes, it's a trick question.

Additionally. The shared folder is not "read only" and full access was allowed from the entire local network.

Timestamps on the file show creation during work hours unlike every other file in the the folder which were created during off hours from a computer brought from home and used at work. Blatant/obvious dagger in the back and untraceable w/out active packet monitoring at the time of transfer. No file creation identifiers.

The fact that it is a shared folder can mean someone else put it there but there's still a child victim regardless. It should be reported period.

If you are wondering if you are allowed to report something that you found on someone else's computer during what could have been a rutine check, in this case it is "yes" because it is a public folder. If it had not been in a shared folder, that would include an entirely different boatload ethical issues, company policies, and laws.

My suggestion is to make a report to Human Resources (HR) that such a file was left in a shared company folder and let them handle it. (If your company has a specific department other than HR for this sort of thing, report it to them.) Despite what a lot of people here have been mentioning, it's not your job to put the pin on this disturbing file. It's Human Resources Dept/the company's job to repremand the offender and/or report it to the police. However, as you are a Network Admin, they may ask you to look into it more and see if you can't trace which computer the file was entered into the system.

Why HR? Because you don't have any proof that any one person created the file. All you have is that it was entered into the folder during company time. There isn't anything the law can do at this point yet until enough evidence is found to point out that someone in particular had put the file in the company public folder. (There isn't much in the law books for simple "Possession" of porn and since you don't know who distributed the picture over the pubic server there isn't much the law can persecute there.)

Sidenote: Finding the file on the director's pc was a coincidence - it was on a shared folder you could have easily found it on someone else's computer, so you cannot automatically point fingers at the director for the file.

Why are you running this test? You already know that Federal Law and every State requires, by law, that you report your finding. You also know you have no legal standing for not reporting the finding of Child Porn wherever found.

If you can trace the IP address, then of course. If you cannot prove which IP address or workstation accessed the porn, then no. Not only that, if there is more than one person accessing this workstation or computer, you better have timesheets, logins, the works, to prove who is accessing what.

Not so tricky, is it.

whether it is a trick question or not, anything like that should be reported, it is then up to the authorities to investigate and find the person responsible for it. there are too many sick pervs out there already to let this go unreported.

Definitely yes! No one is above the law, and such people.... well, they shouldn't breath the same air! You can always make an anonymous report so it wouldn't be traced back to you.

If it's shared then doesn't that mean that anyone could have placed those files there, not necessarily the owner of the PC.

your not sure who owns it, co'z you said its on a shared folder... who knows somebody put it their or you put it in their... report it if you have sufficient evidence though i think its hard. Its a waste of time, he would probably tell its on a shared folder, anyone has access on it..

delete it...
