Politics in the form of democracy that we use today seems to allow a politician to promise one thing before an election and if elected do something different. Shouldn't we the people be able to make them hold true to the things they promised to do if elected afterall they are supposed to be our representatives in government. Do Presidents and Prime Ministers have too much power to wield? Did these same politicians get us into the problems we are into today because of their free wheeling ego boasting jobs?

Because they can! Ever call a Senator and get one of his stock replies? Can't they be recalled by the electorate?

because, they're politicans. during elections - its be the better guy, and once you have the job - and the tax payers money, they'll send some pork to the state/county/city to make voters like em - and often not, news and media coverage will be exclaimed on some other topic and issue, letting the lil politican go - its kinda like this with right wing conservatives:

they say no more gay marriage, banning abortion. protect the guns

the christians and country folk vote for em.

however, even tho this has all been said since 2000 - same gun laws, same gay marriage laws, same abortion laws. wheres this change they promised? no need for it. theres Iraq, Gas Prices, other lil things everyone is all over. its not the politican - its the voters, we tend to forget why we wanted them then focus on problems at hand - thus, our lil liar-of-a-politican gets away skip free. by changin their views and changin thier tactics.

Like Bush told voters in 2004 "they'll say anything to get elected" which in doubt, is somewhat true -- for Bush. when your insecure - you'll blame someone else to take suspicious eyes off your own work.

my 2006 motto: Had Enough? Vote Democrat.

im tired of all the ramblin republicans are doing. same old stuff, since 2000, same old problems. blah. lets try the other guys see what they can do.

We do have the power to make them hold their promise... its called re-election. thats why there are terms. Presidents and prime ministers (talking UK only for sure) are only doing what they are elected to. They are in charge of their foreign policy, and the congress/parliament is in charge of domestic policy... thats the way it is... if you have a problem with the people doing their jobs, fire them (vote them out). And the reason you cant recall in most cases, is because if every time someone got mad they had a recall vote, it would be a neverending election.

The reasons politicians lie is because the public doesn't want to hear the truth. People want to hear what they want to hear. When two candidates are running and one of the tells the truth and the other says what the public wants to hear, the one who says what the public wants to hear wins the election. Thus, and there are exceptions to this, if you want to win an election, you better start lying, because the guy who's telling you the truth doesn't have a chance.

Don't reelect them.

Things are not all the cut and dry. Yes people will run for president and say they want to do this or that. But no president in any party can do what ever they want. The have to get their ideas voted on and approved. That doesn't always work out.

Well, they have been doing it (with little effective negative response) for almost the entire history of the US. Perhaps that is why new politicians jump immediately to backpedaling on promises upon election?

They know that the majority of people are rationally ignorant of the everyday political world. They employ spin doctors like Karl Rove to distort both their message and the message of their opponents. You can always pick the lesser of two evils but never "none of the above".

No, the socialist base are complicated stressed to trust what the media tells them. they're going to vote socialist left continually, regardless. And if their epidermis is a particular colour or they belong to a union the media tells them a thanks to vote. every person that comes alongside that threatens that consistent will be destroyed. frequently it says, politicians will do and say something to be re-elected.

Bottom line..most of them lie...it is called the " anti social personality disorder"....in the actual psychological term it doesn't mean that you won't socialize but it means that this particular person will do anything to get what they want as long as they themselves do not get hurt..ironically many inmates are in prison for their crimes and then diagnosed with the same personality disorder.....
