Re the previous answer about www.freecycle. Beware. Once you register you get emails of every single entry posted on the site. I joined and was getting about 300 per day. It took 3 months to de-register.

I have gotten, to name a few things, a monitor, TV, and rabbit hutch though FC, no charge. I have also gotten rid of 3 fax machines, the same monitor I got earlier, and a bike. Great site.
