HTML is not a programming language, but its the essentail piece you need to learn to make a webpage. Do that first. First of all web designers make the worst programmers and you can disagree with me if you want, but I've been known to make generalizations. Basically many web programmers fail to learn the basics of programming, which essentially start at the system level like C programming language. If you really want to join the club of the elite web guys you must learn the basics. The internet wasn't created in a day. Now once you've learn at least intermediate amount of C then javascript will be no problem for you. Javascript is a programming language that goes in with the html to do some simple processing on the browser side. Server side processing I like to use perl. Perl is just extreamely powerful once you get to use it and was created by larry wall who is a genious!!! Then after learning all of that you should learn AJAX. PHP and ASP are also well known things that do the same thing, but by the time you get to any of these you'll probably know enough to figure out what you want to do on your own.
