i might be a bastard for saying this, but I dont. At least when we're talking about violent crimes: murder, rape, sever violence etc. I think anyone that has some sort of mental disorder or even a mental handicap (retardation) that clouds their judgement into commiting these crimes should be put down. They're defective people and we dont need them in society or to pay for them to live out their lives in prisons or mental institutions.
There are millions of mentally ill people that do not commit violent crimes, just like there are millions of "well" people who do not commit crimes.
regardless of the reason or excuse that causes a person to rape or murder, they need to be removed from society.

Yes, and I feel sorry for societies that are punishing instead of treating mental illnesses.
Not too many people really belong in prison. It is much more effective to find out what went wrong and correct the problem instead of trying to hide from the problem by putting it in a concrete box where you feed it and poke at it every once in a while to see if it is still alive.
Take a look at Norway. They have a very small prison population because they understand that it is simply better to deal with issues like mental illness, drug abuse, lack of guidance, no job, no role models, etc. This keeps the crime rate down too.
Prisons are filled with mentally ill people and many of them are willing and able to be treated.

Prison! Ofcourse not.
Would you blame a blind man for tripping over something!
Schizophrania is a disease, a disorder whatever.
Laws apply to sane people who do what they do INTENTIONALLY.
Laws are for INTENTIONS not truly the acts themselves.
They need to be treated and taken care of, not thrown into prison.
EDIT:
- One can be held responsible only if one has the capabilty of being responsible, i.e. having control over their actions.
- Taking their pills: Schizophrenic people cannot always make proper decisions, control their actions or interpret the world in the way we do.
Simply put- They don't think, act or see like normal people do. Obviously they wouldn't always think that meds are good for them - They don't know whats good for them and they don't understand how dangerous they are. Most of them can;t.. You can't explain it to a lot of them.
You can't hold them responsible because they were born that way.
Keep them away from other people if dangerous, but you can't treat them as criminals.
And BONNI -> You work with them on a daily basis? From you answer I highly doubt that. If you do, then I hope from the bottom of my heart that they train others better than they trained you.

Yes I do feel sorry for them and for the rest of us for allowing our government to mistreat mentally ill people. We offer then no hospitalization unless they commit a crime - them we offer them imprisonment = how can we afford to feed and clothe them in prison but not before they hurt or kill someone?
This does not make sense to me - seems like we are always putting our horses after out carts when it comes to mental illness.

No I don't feel sorry for them. They should likely be put in a mental institution and when and if they get well, then go to prison.

Prison, no. Mental disorders are pretty much out of their consciousness and direct control. In a mental instution seeking help though, yes.

Nope! They committed a crime so they need to do their time too. Most of them would be fine if they took their meds, but a lot of them don't thinking it will help them either not go to prison or not spend as much time.

Yes I do. But they aren't in prison. They get a GMI (guilty mentally incompetent) and go to a mental hospital.

many human beings kill different human beings with out having delusions or listening to voices...... the proportion of murderers between mentally unwell sufferers isn't any larger than the "ordinary" inhabitants...... they simply make a factor out of it in the media to make it sensational. you're generalizing and implying that being mentally unwell makes a individual greater probably to be a murderer. no longer actual.
