I found an antique at a thrift store. I brought it home and thought nothing of it. A few weeks later my husband and I (even my cats, I could see their nostrils flare ) started to smell the scent of smoke, sewage and herbs strongly in certain areas of our home at any given place and time. For over a month I would fly off my chair and run to the kitchen to check the burners on the stove. Or nose around our home searching for the scent. One day I came across the antique on my bookshelf(I had forgot about it). I joked out loud and decided to put it outside on my porch just in case. We haven't smelled anything since. Coincidence?

I'm really not sure what the object is. I was simply attracted to the old look of it. It's some kind of metal it is now a turq color with some rust like stains. The shape is similar to a cup but with a wider oval base and oval top. It has tassels etched on the outter side.

I'm trying to find someone to test it or put it in there home but I don't know how to go about it without them knowing the details.

It would help to have a picture of it, but judging from the description it must be some sort of censer, or some similar object that was used to contain burning incense and other such materials. If it is turquoise in color that could be patina (still not quite sure on that either), which means it could be copper or bronze underneath. I'm not quite sure where the smell of sewage would come from, but if it is herbs and smoke, then it is probably due to previous use as a censer or holder for incense. Try cleaning it out to see if it helps.

Still, I agree with the others who have posted their answers: go to your local antiques dealer and have them check it out. You may have a very unique and beautiful piece on your hands without knowing it, and in the end, all it may need is a little bit of cleaning and polishing up to get rid of the smell.

If, however, you are still getting the strange smells around the house after you've done all of that, consider having the history of the item checked, and if you feel uncomfortable with any of it, try to see if you can sell it or if someone you know can solve the problem for you.

Take it to an antique dealer. It sounds like it didn't come from a smoke free environment. The color changes are from oxidation from leaving it outside where it is more humid and will accelerate the oxidation as opposed to a less humid somewhat dry indoor environment.

wierd.. It wasn't some sort of vase or urn was it?? because maybe if it could be used as an urn for a short while a spirit may be with the antique still..
