That is an excellent question. One thing to remember,though...the elderly person may have Dementia and not be responsible for his/her actions. I think I would try to find the companion that the elderly person came in with, and tell them what i saw.

Frankly, I wish they are given a second chance- if they ever could have a second chance- given their old age. Cause, any one, given the second chance and the time to make it up, will come around. If the case is different like age-related problem I will also help them to the car with the crap they lifted. It won't hurt no one, it will not be too big to affect the shop. They can't even carry their weight.

I would laugh and go about my way. If their so hard up they need to steal from Wal-Mart let'em. If they get caught that was their decision, if they get away with it, I guess it was the will of God(or whoever).

I would tell the person to put it back or they would have a big problem on their hands. Don't care what age, if I see someone stealing, there is no need to rat them out or ignore it, I confront them myself. Why should people get to steal just because they're old? Kids can't get away with it, poor people can't get away with it, drug addicts can't get away with it, seniors shouldn't get away with it either. They already get away with too much as it is.

I would just mind my own business.
And if this was a job interview question, I would alert security....stealing is wrong in any context....

It doesn't matter what you"do"...an employee must see the theft form beginning to capture...never taking their eyes off the shoplifter...regardless of age. If the employee looks away for even a second, the theif can say "I laid it down...didn't you see me?"
