I've had a couple of HP's. They're great except for I always run into software problems with them. (...and I know my way around a computer).

So first, would you go with an all-in-one or with separate devices? Secondly, what printer would you recommend (stand alone and all in one)?

It's mostly for documents, however I will use it occasionally at home for pictures, presentations, etc.

Your thoughts?

I have an HP PSC 2355v all in one and I love it. It was not expensive and I run it with Windows XP with no problem.

If I had one criticism I would say that it balks at the heavier paper sizes - so some postcard stock or cd label paper can be hard to go through, but I have had no trouble with photograph paper.

The all in one was not expensive and it saves on the clutter of multiple machines - and I would not even own a copier if it wasn't for the all in one (I just wouldn't spend the money for a copier but I am glad that I have one).

I am a graphic designer from home (I do books, presentations, cd labels, web sites, etc. as well as kids and holiday projects) and this machine has met my needs for over a year (though now we got a printer that prints directly on CDs also and that makes the paper issue easier to deal with in the all in one).

Peace!

We opted for Brothers 6-in-1 Color Inkjet Multi-Function Center which has Fax/Print/Copy/Scan/PC Fax/PhotoCapture Center functions. It's a pretty compact unit as far as all in ones go and very budget friendly. It offers the highest print resolution available, up to 6000x1200 and features media card slots conveniently located on the front of the machine making transferring images from the digital camera a breeze. We are running the unit on XP Pro and have it shared through a network with no problems.

I should mention that this is not our only unit so in the event it malfunctions (which we haven't had a problem with yet) we have two alternates networked and ready to go. We found the replacement cartridges to be very affordable as well. Our two other units are HP's, a laser and an ink jet photo printer and both replacements are substantially more than the Brother.

Remember, if you have a problem with an All-In-One you are All-In-DONE.

I prefer separate machines and I check the Sunday paper for ads to buy throw away devices. If one goes bad I have a new one in a day instead of waiting for repairs.

This has become so prevalent that the other day my printer needed a new drum and I bought a new printer for half that much and gave the old one to Goodwill.
