I have heard that if you are at fault it is customary to give a gift to the victim(s). This was a simple rear-ending (less than 10km/hr), but I would like to give some expression of my regret for the trouble I caused. What is good to give and what do you write?

i like the answer Orico gave..but..if the person is out for money..saying those words means that you TOTALLY admit wrongdoing....this may hurt you...

If the person is kind..they would forgive and usually make an agreement on the spot..Jidan....This case is good...you pay some cash and they sign a paper in agreement

This is Japan....Buy a gifts..

Forget about the custom, just do what your heart speaks as your sincere apology... they are not really looking for what you write or what kind of gifts..You could call or pay a visit to make sure everything is OK on her side.. they are not really the kind of people n who make a big thing out of a simple rear-end accidents..

If you have a car accident in any oriental country beware. If you are in a taxi and your taxi driver hits someone in Korea, get out of the taxi and take off. They will pin you with charges for the accident. If you hit a chicken in Korea, you will pay for that chicken plus the cost of all the eggs and chickens and chickens chickens and their eggs that they would have produced.
Japan may be a more forgiving country though.

If it's just a fender-bender it's not such a big deal, the gift-giving usually takes place when someone has been injured.

I would, and say "Gomeiwaku kakete moushi wake nai" which means "Sorry I caused you trouble". I would give cookies or chocolates (from Godiva or something).
