Invest in a noise eliminator. Better to hear birds chirping, waves crashing, or a train going by. Anything to drown out the boring sounds of everyday life, most notably, the boring sounds of people talking.

Pitch black is the key, but there are other little things that help. I used a light lavender mist in high school (as an insomniac), and it helped quite a bit. Bath and Body Works has a handful of relaxation products that are nice. I also took to sipping hot chamomile tea- zero caffeine there- to get groggy. No TV, radio, or other stimuli (like eating or exercise) for the hour before you lie down. Gentle stretches and meditation are great as well. Good luck- if all else fails, consult a doc. Sleep is super important.

i used to have to sleep during the day and work nights. i found the best thing was to make sure the room was cool ( a fan in the room also helps with making nice white noise) and dark (shut out all natural light with heavy curtains) and to wind down for an hour before going to sleep. it also helps to wake up at least a couple of hours before going to work - that way you have a full day and you are actually tired when you are done working.

Try getting some really dark curtains or drapes and some earplugs. You also might want to try turning off the ringer on your phone and turning down the volume on your answering machine. Lastly, a hot bath, a good book and some warm milk before going to sleep should help. If you have just started working nights, your body will eventually become used to the new sleeping pattern. Good luck!

i'm so sorry. i used to work nights too, and i know how hard it it to get sleep during the day. it really messes with your body.
the only thing i found was to get the darkest curtains i could find. I also got one of those fountain thingies that has sounds, and i put it to the sound of a light rain. and i bought one of those masks to keep the light out. also, make sure your phones are turned off. if i didn't do this stuff, i never got a good day's sleep.

Blackout the windows with something to get pitch dark room, and have a type of "white noise" going, fan, static on tv or radio, thunderstorm cds, whatever you find relaxing. Dont eat or drink 2 hours before trying to sleep if you can. And keep clock out of sight.

I used to work in rotating triple-shift while working in a cigarette mfg factory as ‘’shift-manager’.

One survey was conducted on our workers by one Dhaka University student as part of his academic project on something like "night-shift workers sleep disturbances and how to eliminate them".

The finding was that most of the workers who could manage to fall asleep were woken up when they would feel to urinate.

Thereby, we got the message and stopped drinking liquids (water, drinks etc) at lease two hours before going to bed. Other measures have already been discussed like getting room darkened and no-noise etc.

Hope these helps.

I take melatonin 5mg. It is a natural supplement. It won't hurt you and you don't wake up all groggy. It is something that your brain produces anyways to help you sleep, the pill just gives you a boost to get you to sleep. you can buy it at walmart, target, grocery store. It's in the vitamin isles.
