I have been researching this very issue which is how I came across this question. Do a search of the questions with "smoking" and "singing" and you will find some more answers. I quit smoking in March of '05 and noticed that I could not hit the notes I used to and my voice broke in my upper register. It took many months for this to subside but it did not completely go away. I then started smoking again every so often which just kept my voice from healing. I am no quit again (1 week) and am trying to mend my voice again. This has been a significant loss to me and is now my primary motivator to stay off the cancer sticks. Your singing is a gift that gives to you and to others. Respect it and give it time, alot of time.

I'm sorry to hear of your problem. I've just completed weeks of speech therapy which I presume applies.
Voice is comprised of three things:
a) Breath - how much damage smoking has done - only a breath capacity could tell you.
b) Vocal chords and their flaps - this requires a medical examination, possibly by a doctor with more syllables than this note.
c) Tongue which is controlled by an incredible number of muscles. A GOOD speech therapist, depending on where you live can run up between $75 to $150 per session. Try a rehab center. If you have insurance, they will sometime cover it.

try and cut back on ciggies...
warm tea (NO lemons or milk! only a little bit of honey)
a hot shower might make you feel better in general...
start with a shoulder massage, body stretches and breathing exercises, then humming, simple humming... then work on singing softly, in small phrases...even if it's nonsensical lyrics...just vocalize... gradually build this all up, until your throat feels better...even then, don't push it...just slowly work your way back up to par...
