As housing market continues to slump, I want to take my time to "shop around" for houses or condos. However, it is hard to find an agent or realtor who is willing to take time to show me around. Frankly, I got better treatment while shopping for a car.

With huge commissions realtor or agent make, you would think they are more willing to spend time with you.

Absolutely. Margaret Maker with Coldwell Banker. Excellent service, very professional and patient, good sense of humor. She was my agent when I was a first-time buyer; she made the process easy for me.

However, regarding "showing you around," most agents will give you lists of houses to look at after they've taken you around to a couple. They give you an idea of what to look for, and then trust that you'll be able to make some decisions on your own.

They don't make their commission off you, though. The seller pays the commission to both the listing and closing agent, not the buyer. If you are just a "lookie loo" and wasting their time and not ready to buy, don't be surprised that they give you the brush off. They don't earn unless they move property.

If you want someone slightly more willing to work with you, look for either a "buyer's agent" only, or a firm/agent that specializes in first time home buyers.

Oh definitely. There's a great agent directory at http://www.realestateforsaleincalifornia.net

Try checking out the "featured" agents first. They are experts in the industry and I can vouch that they are all really honest and approachable. If none of them cover your area, the other agents are lovely as well ;) Good luck!
