I've read quite a bit about aspartame on the net. It's scary stuff. It can damage your short term memory. Over time and in quantity it can bring on diabetic symptoms. It can cause joint pain. I'm trying to cut down, but damn it tastes good. I could really go for a diet coke!

I have read nothing in the scientific literature even suggesting aspartame as carcinogenic, like there was with cyclamates and saccharine. There are anecdotal stories of people having neurologic malfunctions or headaches when they ingest large amounts.

Aspartame is consumed in vast quantities in most countries. I suspect that if it were an effective carcinogen, we would be seeing some trends.

From "Food additive":
Both aspartame and acesulfame K are relatively safe, with no evidence of carcinogenic potential in animal studies.

There is also a connection between multiple sclerosis and aspartame. Aspartame is thought to cause or reinforce MS. It is still not scientifically proven, but it is a plausible theory.
