The problem with hiding files is that they are not very well hidden. Any back links in are still going to be around. Anyone that knows how to display hidden files can find it as well. So it is only hidden from casual users. If you are worried about the contents of the file being found on a shared machine, the best bet is to not keep it on the computer. Use a flash drive or burn the file to CD and keep the media secure.

In Windows Explorer, right-click on the Word document (or any file), select Properties, and then check off the Hidden box under Attributes and then Apply.

To completely hide your file don't create the file in the first place. I'm not kidding. There are many stories of confidential information being recovered from hard drives even though the user thought the information was removed. If you are willing to accept some risk of your file being found, follow the advise given in one of the other answers. Windows is notorious for not allowing you to protect your information from other users. Perhaps with Vista, the type of protection you request will be possible.

The recent documents folder and the My documents fold only give the name for the last 20 open files. Close your document, right click on the document and select properties, and then click hide. Exit properties and open a group of documents. After they have opened, the document you are wanting to hide will be gone.

If it is still there or you don't want to open a large group of documents, put a password to open on the document so no one can access it without the password!

Open your document, click file, click save as (before you save it click on the tools options and click on the security options) this is where you can apply a password to open.
