Things don't really end. They just kind of change form into something you might consider to be a different thing. If you are talking about what will cause humans to go extinct I would say they probably won't, but if they do, it will either be something they cause themselves (a crazy science project gone wild) or else it would be from a huge asteroid. We could get swallowed by a black hole long before the Sun turns into one.
Right now it seems like we will soon change ourselves into something other than human (using genetics) long before we actually destroy ourselves or get destroyed.
But if you are asking about how the destruction of civilization might come about, I would say either through modern warfare or through a very simple economic collapse. Most likely a combination of the two. An ice age would change us, but probably not end us. Hopefully it would be slow enough that we could cope with it.
The Bible says "not by flood". I agree with the Bible on that one.

The world will not end. The world as we know it might end. The world was here before us. It will be here after we are gone. When they ask this question they are asking about our existence in this universe. We are but a speck of life in a more complex Universe. The term world is in reference to earth. There is more out there than earth. The bible was not made by God. It was written by man. A way to control the masses(people). Don't worry about what will happen in the future. Worry about your mom and dad driving a Hummer now. Burning up all the fossil fuels and releasing more gases that will increase the barriers in the atmosphere. Worry about recycling now. How you can make this a better world.

I think the human race will become extinct ultimately via nuclear weapons, but this is how I think it will happen in its entirety: first there will be a series of really bad new diseases to come around and wipe out enormous chunks of the population...those who survive the viruses will endure the changing climate and grizzly hell on earth-scenerios, only to soon begin firing nukes at each other, thus ending the human race and destroying the planet for a few million years...About a few million years later, a new species will evolve, kinda like us but a bit different and they will become very excited when they discover our fossils in the rocks but ultimately they will blow themselves up into oblivion just like we did...It is possible that at some point the entire earth will become completely destroyed by these explosions...or maybe it will be engulfed by the sun if nothing new evolves to blow up the planet.

"the world" ... ie "earth" ... wil be consumed by the transition of Sol into a red-giant in the "normal" course of stellar evolution across the 'main-sequence' of mass-determined progress.

(in a few billion years ... humanity might not be on the planet by then ... dunno ... preservation of the fragile eco-system for a few more hundred years appears problematic, but I can't predict the future of technology OR the future of species-driven destructive behaviour ... tho I hope for human survival, it's not a "given" )

I would say we'll be sucked into a black hole ourselves, but that would be way too pessimistic.

Well then, we won't die painfully!
