Do you have a hero?
What about some unusual person from out-of-state that no one but you knows of. That way the results of your research will really pack a punch.
Wichita, KS had their BTK killer. Connecticut had Michael B. Ross and Beth Ann Carpenter. Florida had the Gainesville killer who killed all those student nurses.
You could also research people who made an odd impact on the world. Wasn't Jon Benet's mother Miss America at one time?
Do you know of anyone who went to school with or grew up with somebody famous? Maybe you could write about *them* and their connection to that particular famous person. That would really go over well.
Just pick out some interesting and outstanding and go with that...
