Taking the ads off TV. They stop airing them.

it means that they ads placed will be removed or cancelled. for example, a sponsor that disagrees with the content of a program may pull their ads in protest. this not only sends message to the tv station or network, but to the show itself. depending on the weight of the sponsor and liberal/conservative views of the show/director/writers/producers, it may or may not cause any changes in the program.
