Old Yeller - If this movie doesn't make you sad, nothing will.
Diary of Anne Frank - the last sentence she ever wrote was "I believe people are good at heart" or something. And she died in a concentration camp, with her sister and mother.
Band of Brothers - (Really a mini series, but oh well. I can't think of another movie/series that shows the horror of war and the courage and valor that soldier have in quite the same way.)
