or do "minorities' finally have a valid complaint?

What's right? If we lived in a colorless society something besides color would be singled out. In Northern Ireland the police were able to target Catholics. If you become a target, you will be singled out, rest assured.

Profiling is a legitimate technique. It's the use of indicators (race, for example) that suggest other factors (poverty, possible criminality). Racial profiling by police officers would be supported by statistical evidence that, in fact, black americans are disproportionately poorer and prone to criminal behavior. Racial profiling doesn't claim that being black is the or even a reason for criminal behavior, just that being black and being a criminal is more common than average.

Used as such a tool, racial profiling shouldn't be a problem. We allow similar sorts of profiling by insurance companies; young males are charged a higher rate on their car insurance than older women because young males have a habit of unsafe driving.

However, if the profile is misunderstood as a norm (i.e., if we assume that all black people are criminals, or that all young men are dangerous drivers), then we overgeneralize the trend, apply it to all members of a population, and approach racism, agism, and sexism, respectively. We need to be able to draw the lines between few, some, many, most, and all and keep to them to avoid racial profiling becoming racism.

I have gone through a "citizens academy" and done several ride outs with the cops.

It is nearly impossible to see someone's race while you are pulling them over for a traffic offense.

Keep in mind there are some people that are always going to be racist in any job. I don't think cops are more or less than any other profession.

I don't think minorities as a whole can complain but there are going to be isolated incidents which may be racially motivated and those need to be addressed and investigated one at a time.

From my experiences I would say that the complaint is valid. I own my own business and am very successful. As a consequence I drive a very nice sports car. I get pulled over at least 2 times a week, have had my car searched on numerous ocassions and one time I was handcuffed based on an officer saying that my car fit the description of a stolen vehicle. Its to the point now that whenever I get pulled over I can actually greet many of the officers by name. I am always asked if I have any weapons or drugs in my car. Despite the fact that most of these same officers pull me over time and time again, and I know they recognize me by now, I know they are praying for the day that they may find me in violation of the law.

I think it is a problem... at least in certain places!

A lot of prejudice still exist and in big cities, a lot of the poor communities are consisted of non-white people because of immigration and prejudice. Therefore, mischief and gang are more likely to occur in those neighborhoods instead of the rich suburbs (they specialise in drugs and financial fraud!!!). I don't think that because you are black, brown, yellow or poor, whatever that you are more likely to be a criminal.... I think that your surroundings and bad influences might.

Unfortunately... I think you have a valid complaint... but also a growing one since immigration is always on track there is more of mixed races in big cities. Let's hope one day this will be ancient history... and we will all realise that we are all human's in the end!

Racial profiling is a pathetic activity that doesn't actually work even if the statistics are on the profiler's side.

It gives an apparent shortcut, which leads to cops and security people getting lazy about looking for useful evidence or "interesting" behavior.

I think racism is the issue not profiling. If your a white man in an all black area then your an undercover cop.
