to lessen the affects of diarrhea? She is 5 months and has just started this tonight. She does not have a temperature. She does not seem sick. I give her pedialite, and took her off of her formula for the night? Is there anything else I can do for her until I can get her into see the doc in the morning? I really don't want to take her to the dirty emergency room, if I can all avoid it. Its already 12:30am here. She would probably get in faster at the doctors office than waiting all night at the hospital.Anything to help her firm up her tummy troubles? I was thinking maybe some rice cereal, but I am not sure. Any advice would be appreciated. Her poor tushy is starting to get a rash too..

She accepts her bottle just fine. She is taking fluids, and not spitting up.

I would take her into the ER asap. Babies can get dehydrated a lot faster than adults do because they are so little. At 5 months old she still need her formula, so please don't take her off that.

Can you at least call her doctor tonight? You usually can call them at night for urgent reasons.

If she isn't vomiting and is taking the pedialite and still has wet dieapers and tears and/or wet mouth then she'll be fine till the doc app in the am. Just keep doing what your doing and put some diaper rash cream on her tushy. Dont give her any solids yet it could upset her stomach.. the pediatrician will prob recommend keeping her on liquids only for a day or two then slowly start adding solids back in. since she is only 5 months I assume that will be rice and bananas. When she is older its called the BRAT diet: Bananas, rice, apples, and toast. Your question was refreshing. Sometimes the questions people ask about their children babies in particular makes me worried.... your are doing everything right. Waiting till the am will be the best for you and her at this point. Hope she feels better soon. Take care

It doesn't take long for a rash if they have that problem. Use Desitin or any other diaper cream or ointment to keep that from getting worse.

Other than getting her to a doctor tonight, rice cereal (if she's used to eating it) or the Pedialyte are probably it. You don't want to give her anything from, say, a drug store until you talk to the doctor.

If, by any chance, she's just going and going to the point where she could be dehydrating just go to the ER. You probably know that a wet diaper is a good sign. A dry diaper means dehydration.l

Do NOT give the BRAT diet to a 5-month old!!! Ack!

Has your baby started solids at all? How have you determined that it is diarrhea? (i.e. how many stools in 1 hour)

Does your doctor's office have an after-hours service where they can have a Dr. or nurse call you and help you determine what to do?

I would not give baby any unfamiliar foods, so if any of the suggestions involve something she hasn't had before, ignore them. I would give pedialyte, to ensure she's not dehydrated. Also watch her closely -- signs of dehydration are:
failure to make tears when crying
dryness of the mouth
Few or no wet diapers

If she's drooling or her mouth looks wet, producing wet diapers (may be hard to tell if there's lots of BMs!), and producing tears, then wait until morning. If not, GO NOW. The ER will rush you through if they can because she's so young.

HUGS to your little sweetie, and I hope she feels better soon!

Call the ER and ask to talk to a nurse. In the meantime, continue giving her the pedialyte, as often as she wants it. It says on the bottle not to offer formula while you are giving pedialyte. That is because the formula can make it worse. Change her more frequently than usual, and use a diaper rash barrier cream (the white ones, with zinc in them) also a warm bath will help. Take her to the doctor as soon as you can. Has she had any new foods, drinks, or medicines lately? If so, tell your doctor what they were. I wouldn't give her cereal, it can cause cramping.

when my son had diarrhea, he was about 5 months and he had it nonstop (like 12 diapers a day) and I was worried. My doctor told me that as long as he stayed hydrated and had tears or urine, he was fine. They also told me to use the BRAT diet. B is for bananas, R is for rice cereal, A is for applesauce, and T is for Toast. I did that with my son and he got better really fast. As long as she is drinking any type of fluid, she should be ok. I would just call the hospital and they might be able to give you more info. Just dont panic! Its hard to do, but Moms tend to overreact when it comes to our babies.

It sounds like u are doing all the right things to help. I would wait it out til the morning unless there is vomiting, which is not the case. It might be the formula she is taking. for the time being just put some desitin or diaper rash cream on her bottom.

Bananas...anything with Bananas! Juice or food....bananas work! Pedialite could be upsetting her tummy too...try water to keep her hydrated! I wouldnt go to the emergency room for the same reasons, its so dirty and gross. If she is drinking fluids she is ok till morning!

Just make sure she is getting plenty of fluids. She could be teething and it's normal to have diarrhea during those stages. My child started to teeth incredibly early. But you are concerned I would definitely take her to the doctor.

If she is taking the bottle that's enough until you get her to the doctor in the morning. You don't want to run the risk of vomitting with diarrhea.

If she develops fever or cries as if in pain, take her into the emerg. right away.
