From what I've seen growing up, the older they are towards their teens, the harder it gets. Especially if the children lose contact with one of their parents.

That totally depends...
Do parents fight most of the time when together?-- Then maybe they're better off if parents divorce.
Will they get to see both parents equally after the divorce? Maybe seeing each parent alone in a peaceful setting is healthier for a child.
Is one parent abusive in any way? If so, maybe divorce is best.
If there's no abuse/cheating in the relationship, then try all means to work it out.
Overall, divorce will hurt-- but kids are resilient and will adapt.

It's different in each case. Sometimes divorce is for the better for the kids (like when the parents fight all the time or if one of them is abusive) and sometimes they are for the worse (like when they don't get to see one parent much anymore or feel like the divorce was unnecessary or their fault). You have to consider the circumstances in each case, because it depends on a lot of things.
