Because some people are very rude and unaccepting of others. Particularly people different from them.

This starts in kindergarten.

Virginia - you are a very special person, and I don't think you are like the rest of us :) I think the rest of us are shy for entirely different reasons.

Because you can read people enough to know that sometimes you can't fully trust them to accept all your emotions, but that when you hide them, they can be comfortable with who you are. You are shy, so for them to find a person who's life is filled with deep currents of emotion, thought, and expression, all hidden behind a quiet facade, they won't always know how to handle it. You hide part of who you are because you don't feel like you can let all of who you are be known to everyone, but after-all, would you want everyone to know those little secrets that keep you living day by day, that put that subtle spark in your eyes as you pass people silently in the hall, eyes downcast but for a moment in passing.

Being shy is about living in your own corner of the world, not because you don't necessarily want to be in the outside, but because you crave the depth that you can get when you look within, rather than just the width of that outside. It's about contemplating your life and coming upon an epiphany that would change the rest of your life more than even you could imagine, and to have no one know about it because you are shy, and the things that are the most important to you are all too often kept hidden.

You don't hate social interactions, but you sometimes feel as if you can get infinitely more out of self-reflection than from trying to spread yourself out amongst others. It can be sitting on your own on a crisp autumn morning and, while the others talk fervently about whatever seems the most important, you watch the bright leaves loosen from the branches and begin to fall. And you can hear the music, the soft breath of wind against the whisper of the trees as their leaves fall, fluttering down like notes onto the page. You can sense the serene magnificence of it all, as you feel the strong currents of the world moving about while the seasons change and winter is borne on the cold of every night. You can close your eyes and be swept away in the thoughts and emotions, and let the inner tempest lull in the calm harbors of this island of peace.

You are an introvert, and can hold the world in your hands if only those people down the hall would quiet down so you could think. Being shy can be dark, lonely, and sad, but the solitude can be so beautiful, soothing, and intoxicating it it's own subtle way. It can be the garment of choice for the introvert, a cloak to keep out the world and to seal in that which you don't want to escape.

If someone is shy, it's basically due to that person's being insecure about himself or herself. Shy people are afraid to get rejected, and they have this fear because they probably were rejected in the past. Why would they want to go through it again (that's their rationale)?

Its in our blood! Someone has to be shy! Life would be boring if everyone was the same.

I think its because we are afraid people are going to disapprove or dislike what we say or do. We care too much about other people's opinion, which all that is basically low self esteen or no self confidence.
