chicago to wichita?

What's the best route (time wise).

To Wichita, KS:

I-88W - I-80W - I-35S. If you live in south Chicago, don't bother with I-88, just jump on I-80W. (about 698 miles)

It's about the same going I-55S - I-70W - I-35S, but going through St. Louis can be a real time loser. (about 714 miles)

Note that I-88 in IL is toll and I-35 in KS is toll.

by plane it is less than 50 minutes. I have traveled that route.
