In the majority of today's youth, no. However, if you know anything about statistical averages, it has been shown that if you don't have a career path in place by the age of 25, overall, you will be forced to a "job" for a living.
This is the primary reason going to college right out of high school and getting a degree in "something" offers you an opportunity to get a "head start" over those who don't take advantage of "good sense".
Think about what interests you. Think about your talents, what you are good at. Everyone has a natural ability for something use that to your advantage. The lucky ones have an ability for something AND enjoy doing it. Others enjoy doing it, but have to learn enough to put it into career form. Still others have an affinity for something, but it fails to meet financial goals.
Whatever your good at, whatever you enjoy, do something about it now. Waiting will only ensure your name and your place in the statistical averages.
Essentially, you need to focus, get serious and do some research into the things open to you.
Good luck, I am sure you will do fine if you just get it together and "just do it".

I'm 31 and I have no idea what I want to do for a career. I have a music degree but am not working in Music and don't want to. I have had a successful job with the government for almost 10 years but I don't really want to do it for the rest of my life. Most of the people I know feel the same way I do. I think someone like my mom who loves what she does and wants to do it for the rest of her life is pretty unusual. So, I would say that it is perfectly normal for a 21 year old to still not know what you want to be when you grow up.

Is sure is! If it's any consolation, I've asked this same question to dozens of adults:

"Did you have any idea in high school that you would be working in this type of job?"

Virtually everyone said the same thing, No way!

If you are interested in doing some career exploration,
Go to
www.monster.com
Open the tab marked "career advice"
On the left side, look at "Targeted advice"
and click on some of the links. That has some great career assessment tools to explore interests.

One suggestion I have is to ask yourself the following questions:
If all jobs paid the same amount of money, what type of work would you want to do?
Why did you pick that type of career?

Then another website I would recommend looking at is
www.careervoyages.com because it gives kind of a long term forecast on job growth.

Bear in mind that any website that lists typical salary ranges, are usually inflated.

Speaking of salary information, another great website is
www.salary.com
Certain sections, though are members only section, and other parts of salary.com is open to anyone.

Good luck in your jbo search!

Yes, i only know what to do when i was 25. Right now I have good husband and 4 restaurants in Singapore, and i am typing to you in my personal office. Don't give up in yourself.

By the way tell you some jokes:

-Doctor! I have a serious problem, I can never remember what i just said.
-When did you first notice this problem?
-What problem?

One more joke:

A guy calls his vet and says "What should I do with my cat?Vet says "What do you mean? Guy says "I had a leak in my lawnmowers gas tank and the cat drank the gas. Then the cat began to run around and around the yard, climbed a tree. then fell out of the tree stiff. Vet says "Is the cat dead? Guy replies "nope he ran out of gas.

Last of all just want to tell you that whatever you do, just don't give up. Also you must love and care for the people around you. In that way they will also show you the love that you show to them. Just be yourself and happy everyday. Wish you all the best and good luck!!

Yes, completely normal. Don't let yourself be forced into a career you don't want. Or you'll end up changing careers when you are 40 or so. Take your time. Go for something that you like to do (and make money). It's such a blessing to actually like your job.

I was 28 before I figured it out. I'm 30 now, and sometimes I feel like I've wasted a lot of years, but at least I'm not stuck in a job I hate. I'd rather start a little late but do what I love than start early and end up like my dad!

Absolutely!! I didn't know what I really wanted to do until afew months ago. Before then I tried all different areas to find out which one best suited me and my skills. Life is all about experience and trying new things. I don't think it really matter how long it takes you, as there really is no "normal" since everybody if different. Let him come to his own conclusions in his own time.

As Baz Luhrmann says in his spoken word/song "Everyone Wear Sunscreen" "Some of the most interesting people I know didn't know aht they wanted to do at 25, the most interesting people I know still don't know what they want to be when they grow up"

Perfectly normal.

Something that helped me was going through a book like, "What Color is Your Parachute." It took awhile, but if you're serious about finding some direction that's a good place to start.
