We were a family of 5. We rented a car and for some reason were upgraded to a van. We drove to the Hoover dam, parked and took the tour an dlots of photos, jumped into the van and made it tto the Grand Canyon with time to spare. We took the rim trail around the south side. The south side is the closest. It is the drier, more arid side. I do not think you will have much time if you try to make it to the north rim, which is forested and much cooler and higher.
We only had 3 days for the Canyon, so we found a hotel close by that was not full and negotiated a huge room for the price of a double. They had an Indian story teller and dancers. It was fantastic and the meal was goo too. We went back to the Canyon the next day (you have to pay to enter or have a Fedral Park Pass) and a huge cold rain shower blew up and made things to slick to hike on the trail. As we were leaving we saw a horseback riding place across from a tourist trap. The horse were muddy, but the owners said if we were willing to ride them, they would give us a break in the price. We could only ride around this huge field, but they pretty much let us go on our own, so it was pretty fun. The horses were happy to trot a bit, saw some rabbits. One horse wanted to chase them. We enjoyed the ride.
We then returned to Las Vegas and went to the Aladin for the horse tournament supper I believe. During the day we saw the Pirate ship act and walked the strip with the kids. We stayed at Circus Circus(booked online cheap) and had a blast with the kids, then caught a flight home. Three nights in Las Vegas, two nights in Arizona. Missed the higher weekend prices. Was a great visit. This was a while back, 2000, I think.
They have all sorts of tours from Las Vegas to the Grand Canyon. Helicopter and bus tours mostly. Too expensive for our family of 5. There are a lot of canyons that are just as pretty that are even closer, but I think you have to book through a Indian reservation or something to get to those spots or go on one of the helicopter tours.
Lots of things, including the hikes down the Canyon are listed online.

There are a number of company's that offer a variety of tours to the Grand Canyon.
I highly recommend you take a tour. The drive to the Canyon is long and some what boring for the most part.

If you can afford to? I would suggest you spend the night a the Canyon.

I have personally been to the Grand Canyon a number of times. And to really see & experince the Canyon, you need to be there at least over night.

At the Canyon itself they run a free shuttle bus along the south Rim. You can get on and off, stop at each point for as long as you want.
Shuttle takes you to areas that the public can no longer drive to.

Now days with the cost of the car rental, cost of gas, and your time in driving and maybe missing out on some great sights not knowing where they are.
Tour is the only way to go. Espessially if you are own.
There are van tours as well as large bus.

If you really want to do it up right, and can afford. Do a heilcopter trip over canyon, Or fly from Vegas to the Canyon and stay, companys also arrange these sort of trips.

Rent a car and drive up to Williams, AZ. You can go online and go to the Grand Canyon Railway. Its a very nice hotel that offers a two hr scenic train ride to the Grand Canyon. The website is www.thetrain.com The drive from LV to Williams should be about 4 hrs. You can drive up at night and get a hotel room, you eat free and then take the train in the morning. It leaves later that afternoon.
