G'day Gizmo 1954,

Thanks for your question.

The Grand Canyon is about 250 miles from Las Vegas. You should take highway 93 south from Las Vegas to Interstate 40 east to highway 64. The trip takes about 4 1/2 hours and takes you right over Hoover Dam.

There are plenty of bus trips available. However, if you want to travel at your own pace, I would drive yourself and see what you want to see when you want to see it.

Regards

There are no big secrets about the Canyon. It is mostly asking around, surfing, reading or researching good view spots. I'd skip the expensive and long bus tour and rent a car. Some cultural spots it is good to take the tour. I don't include this one. Driving is so much more flexible, when you leave Vegas, where you stop along the way, what you have to eat, how long you spend at hoover dam and how long you spend at the Canyon, etc.

A week in Vegas is plenty. So jumping in a car is probably a refreshing change. The main way the other way around is if you are planning a lot of late, late nightlife, the you may want to stay up all night a catch the early tour buses and crash on the trip.

It doesn't sound like you plan to spend the night in the area? It is another option.

The only other thing, is if you aren't worried about price, then I would take one of the air tours.

Rent a car and drive yourself. You can stop wherever you like and take pictures of the beautiful scenery on your way to the Grand Canyon.
Assuming you will be visiting the South Rim, you will approach the canyon on Highway 180 via the nearby towns of Flagstaff or Williams, stop at Tusayan, main attraction here is the Grand Canyon IMAX Theater, which I highly recommend.
Your first stop inside the park should be at Grand Canyon Village, Visitor Center, where you to get better acquainted with the park.

The East Rim Drive is a 26-mile drive offering several overlooks to get a better view, best viewing areas are Yaki Point and Grandview Point with its panoramic wide-angle views. Visit Tusayan Ruins and Museum for information about the ancient Native American cultures in the area. The drive ends at the Watchtower at Desert View with views of the Painted Desert to the east and the Colorado River deep down inside the gorge.

West Rim Drive offers a greater variety of canyon views, however, this drive is closed to private vehicles in the summer, but a free shuttle service from Grand Canyon Village is available if you get tired after choosing to hike the eight-mile Rim Trail.

On your way back to Las Vegas choose to drive south to Sedona,
(famous Chapel of the Holy Cross, Red Rocks) and from there it is 278 Miles back to LV.
All this.... you can't see by taking a bus !!!!!

There are bus tours, but if you're a more independent traveler, rent a car. Sedona and Oak Creek Canyon are worth seeing if you have time.
