I've had micromangers who drive you mad, the contradictors who make a decision then deny it then make another- wait ten mins then deny the new choice.

Bosses you can never find- and I do mean when you need them around.

Bosses who decide they MUST be your best friend and have the personality of tree bark.

OK Bosses, Good Bosses, and the ever popular totally inept boss that makes you wonder who was smoking what when they decided to hire this one.

Currently I have a Fantastic boss, a Great Boss, and last but not least the elusive Stupendous Boss.

Yeah I have three bosses same job if case you were wondering.

I have learned over the years what makes a 'great' boss is someone who understands the position, the company and its goals. Communicates effectively with his employees frequently and makes the effort to know details about each employees projects, workloads, or life to make pleasent conversation with anyone in the office while offerring advice, critisim, or thanking them for work they have accomplished.

A good boss can indeed give bad news or critical reviews to an employee in proper context that shows the employee he not only does know what everyone is doing and who does it well and who needs help. If they can give you feedback that is negative and offer you advice to improve that you feel would indeed work and in the end you are not feeling hurt but rather encouraged to try and do better on the next project then you have a truly Great Boss.

Finding that personal balance for each employee as well as the group is not easy and Boss's who can do it 75-90% of the time in a workplace deserves credit. The employees are not only happy, they are productive and work as a team and think like a team. The end results is happy workers who product can't be beat because they built it together with ideas-advice-humor-enjoyment-and most of all PRIDE.

When you happen to find one of these Great Bosses stick with them if you can they can mentor you and as they climb the corporate ladder you can too.

When I worked at Rebel Radio (heavy metal radio station outside of Chicago), my boss was real cool. Actually, over the years from working there, we became close friends. He was never bossy, and I don't think I ever complained about him, either.
Yeah, probably the best boss I ever had, really...at least in that respect.

My cool, friendly boss was a great guy, but a poor businessman.

I think the cool and friendly thing is a function of how YOU foster the relationship, and on what level you offer YOUR friendship and coolness.

I'm striving to be the cool friendly boss, and an excellent businessman. My retention and profits are the bellweathers for me.

Yes, it's possible to have a cool boss. I am fortunate to work for 2 really cool bosses. They're both friendly and considerate. I work harder for them than I would for someone who is mean because they are nice.
