Well think about it.. we can control our deaths, others may control our deaths at any given time..If the individual chooses. Really I don't believe there is any specific control, But I don't see this picture without God.. I just believe we are animals like the rest, and our lives and deaths are a part of the Eco system, or are supposed to be.. We want so badly to have some kind of special value more than everybody else. Asking "Why are we here?" is assuming there is a divine reason.
Do you want a simple, true answer?
Why are we here?
Compost..
Controlling populations of animals that we eat.
Surviving and passing our genes on to the next generation.
SURVIVAL
Never forget that we are animals.. Just as precious and meaningful as the smallest one-celled creature. What goes on after that is up to you. Your faith is the only thing that may answer this question. Certainly not yahoo Answers.

We are born on this earth with a purpose, which we may not necessarily fulfil before 'death' comes.we come to keep the balance on earth.now this balance is being disrupted and we are facing consequences.
death is the yin of life's yang.if death did not come to us then life also would not be there.when man was newly created,he knew nothing of how to preserve, the moon, underwater, etc. if people did not die then eventually the population would grow so much that resources would not be able to support life and we would be wiped out.if death could be controlled then the dinosaurs would not have died and we would not be sitting and debating this question.if death could be controlled, terrorists would live forever and wreck havoc.
by the way, death can be controlled according to a book by Linda Goodman. it is called 'sun signs'.technically we can live forever and look 30.
as for what we are doing here, do you know that about 2000yrs ago Greek philosophers thought that the sun was a ball of iron not much bigger than Greece? that we believed we were made of air, water, fire, earth?that people lived for no more than 40yrs?we are here to evolve for the good of people, though now we seem to be straying from that path

Of course it's a very sensible question to be put to any adolescent individual. Try to understand your religion, be it Islam, Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism etc. The basic concept of any religion will be reunion with God at the end. God created mankind to enjoy this materialistic world in a more legitimate way, to love other creatures and do service to humanity, ultimately leading to the goal for which mankind was created. The goal - love others and be loved. Only when you are attached to your own religion and have the fear of God, you will not go astray. What we are doing depends upon the individual. But to grow and reproduce is the common norm any living creature is destined with. The control of our death lies in the hands of God, the ultimate Creater. And it is beyond the human control. That is why we call Him God, the total Controller of all things-Omnipotent . Instead of scrutinising the death control, we can work hard to bring peace and harmony so that our death will be peaceful.

We were born in earth because that is the way things were put into place.
We are here to do simply what we are here to do, whether that be to work as an auto salesman or to be the next president.
We can't control our own death because if we could then it would be abused by at least one person.
========
Now moving away from my personal beliefs and moving onto religious/philosophical ones...
Every great religion and philosophy has something to say on the meaning of life and death. Some, such as Daoism (or Taoism), state that the purpose of life is to achieve balanced with yin and yan (or ying and yang if you want the "modernized" name). Then there is Christianity, which believes the meaning of life is to achieve salvation and to convert others to believe in God and in the end please God through humble service.
The death part gets a little unfocused. There are reasons such as punishment, or God's will, or it was meant to be. There is also beliefs in afterlife or reincarnation.

Philosophy of cause and effect, tell us that nothing happens without a cause. Hence, birth of a man is also not free from a cause. If one cannot find any higher reason of his or her birth , he or she is definitely coming to eat, drink and produce children. Apart from this biological need, a man may find out a good purpose of his life. I think question raised by you, "why we can't control our death" --, itself may be one of the noble purposes of life. There are many scientist and doctors, who had dedicated their lives, to get an answer to your question. As a result of their efforts, control of death becomes possible, at least to some extent of time with the help of medical department.
However, I like to say that question of immortality will open up a new chapter for you.

Birth & Death go together. Just like you did not choose to be born you cant really control death. By the way you forgot people do unfortunately take their own life (suicide) and hence do play a role in ending it. I know it is rare but it does happen unfortunately.
As for the meaning: If you find one let us know please. In the meanwhile answering Y!Answers will do as some kind of meaning.

Every man and every animal has some destiny. After death a man mixes with "Panchabhut": kshiti.app,maroo,tej,byom.when we are born we again are destined to meet with Panchbhut. But after we complete each cycle of Panchabhut ---> life----> Panchabhut we are elevated to a next higher (or better) stage of life according to our
acts( karmafal). It is believed Vivekananda was born in his ninth stage of life. The happiest man surely have done very good acts in his past lives. This is the main reason why someone is rich and another
person is poor.Although we all are human all of us would
have been born all rich or all poor.Gautam Buddha was born 27times before he became Gautam Buddha.

You are expected to do something in this universe, for that you have given chance. If you are not interested in that, chance will be given to other whom waiting in queue. That's secret of birth and death. If you think it meaningless, it is highly idiotic that you thought of you have energy. The energy comes only as gift to do something. It's not in our hand to control death, because what you have done upto death is correct/incorrect known to only third person who is watching you from birth.
