The carpenter completes 1/6 of a shed each hour. The apprentice completes 1/16 of a shed each hour.

The carpenter works x hours. The apprentice works x+5 hours.

The carpenter completed x/6 of the shed. The apprentice completed (x+5)/16 of the shed. These two contributions total 1 shed. So now you have an equation:

x / 6 + (x + 5) / 16 = 1. Solve for x = 3. The carpenter works 3 hours, the apprentice works 8.

The carpenter can finish the work in 6 hours. It means that he/she can do 1/6 of work in every hour. On the other hand, his apprentice needs 16 hours to do this job. In other words, he can do 1/16 of the work in every hour.
If the carpenter work a hours, his apprentice will work (a+5) hours. So, [a*1/6] + [(a+5)*1/16] = 1. It is because they finally do 100% of the work. You can simplify the formula like this: a/6 + a/16 + 5/16 = 1 → a/6 + a/16 = 1 - 5/16 → 8a/48 + 3a/48 = 11/16 → 11a/48 = 11/16 → a = 11/16 * 48/11 → a=3
It means that the carpenter works 3 hours and his apprentice works 8 hours.

the carpenter completes 1/6 of the shed per hour; the apprentice completes 1/16.
carpenter hours = c
apprentice hours = a
c=a-5
1/6 c + 1/16 a = 1
8c + 3a = 48
substitute and get
8a-40+3a=48
11a=88
a=8
c=3
answer: the carpenter worked 3, the apprentice worked 8

well if you had two people sharing work, they would have to do half the work, therefore the carpenter would work 3 hours and the apprentice would work 8 which equals 13 hours. 8 is 5 more hours than 3..... ???

A problem is something that only you can create because you won't leave it alone. If you don't worry about it, then it's not a problem. That's why I try not to worry, and then I don't have problems.
