There actually is a physiological reason why some people are into S/M. For the sadist, it's the adrenaline rush that one gets when they have the opportunity to inflict pain on another. For the masochist, it's the endorphin high that comes with the brain's response to painful stimuli. In both cases, it's like a natural elation that occurs.
I suspect that a lot of people are repulsed by the idea of S/M because the mentality that they have is that pain and love are diametrically opposite of each other. In response to that, I'll point out that there is a difference between pain and abuse, where the second is where real damage occurs, either physically or emotionally. There's also different kinds of pain. Getting a vaccination shot is a pain, but a small one compared to getting sick. Also, a masochist that relishes having their behinds red as a lobster would most like dread a visit to the dentist..
I have to agree that S/M does have connotations of negativity with it. Some of it is the fault of the lifestyle community, but I think that media images have distorted S/M for its own purposes. That for some S/M is an intimate symbiosis while for others a perversion shows the differences in the human experience, and I can live with that.

I watch a show in Canada called Kink. It follows real people who are into different things. It really taught me alot, I always thought it was about being mean and beating on someone. Its not, its all about trust and love. Its not my lifestyle, but I'm open minded and like the show.

And for some of us its not a matter of enjoyment, it is how we express our sexuality. In other words, my body responds sexually to creating pain in a controlled and CONSENSUAL setting..
No, I didn't torture animals as a child, however, for you religious types, where I really learned that I was a true Sadist was in my confirmation classes. We read books detailing the torturing of the saints, and they turned me on. I was ten, I had no idea what that meant, but later on, I figured it out.

'Cause I can't help but be who an what I am. If some ppl think that being this way makes me "sick" or "mentally ill" that is their problems. I lived too much of my life trying to be what other ppl felt I should be. Now, I have decided to be myself and love me just as I am!
I just love it when it hurts sooo goooood!

The world's filled with all kinds. If it's consensual and not hurting anyone, hey, whatever does it for you should just be fine with everybody else.
