It's all a matter of chance. The XX sperms, however (those that make female babies) are stronger, heartier and live longer within the acidic environment of the female reproductive system. They can sometimes live up to 5 days inside. The XY sperms which are the ones that make male babies are weaker and usually die in 1 to 2 days, they have a more difficult time surviving in the acidic environment. (Seminal fluid is highly alkaline). Therefore, the closer you are to your ovulation when you have sex, the more likely you are to conceive a boy. It will also be best if your husband does not have any sex or ejaculation for 5 to 7 days before you try to conceive. It helps the sperms to increase their numbers. To increase your chances, I have heard recommendations to some women to douche with a solution of baking soda and water. (1 teaspoon of baking soda to a quart of warm water). This makes the vaginal environment more alkaline and favorable to the XY (male) sperm cells. I don't have any hard evidence either way to prove any of this, but have fun trying.

I believe Jan is right. Its probably easier to effectively increase the chances for a girl than it is to increase the chances for a boy. Years ago I also read something about acidity levels as well. Maybe you could do a search like, "increasing the chances of conceiving a boy" and see if you get any more information on either the thing about some sperm living longer/some being faster and the acidity thing.

The answers above about the sperm are correct. I learned of this when I went through fertility treatments. The male sperm swims faster so they arrive first, but if the egg isn't there, they begin to die off (unless it arrives right after they do). The females are slower, but live longer, so if the egg is released after the males are dying off, your chance of a conceiving a girl rises.

same way as for conceiving a baby girl. You get about 50-50 odds of either one. They are both desirable so why do you care?

well, iv'e read that if you have sex on the day of ovulation, that is the best time to try to conceive a boy, because the boy sperm live a shorter life, but swim faster than the girl, the girl live longer but don't swim as fast.

The only way to get a baby boy is to pay for VERY expensive Gene Selection therapy.

Well, it is thought that male sperm swim faster but die younger, and female sperm take 2-3 days to get to their destination. So, if you want a baby boy, try to have sex the day you are fertile.

To find the day you are fertile try charting your basal body temperature.

Good luck!

The only way I've heard of guaranteeing a babies sex has to do with artificial insemination, and is probly *extremely* expensive, and somewhat medically risky.

Best advice, do it naturally and take your 50/50 odds.
