Ford had a recall on ignition switches several years ago, because they had instances of them catching fire!!. Check with a Ford dealer to see if your truck was involved!

My guess is the contacts got messed up in the ignition switch over years of use and with heat generated from normal use probably melted it pretty good too... It was a very occasional problem seen on those style ignition switches

There were recalls involving the ignition switch but not for that truck or year if I remember.... that recall was 95s28 and I think stopped on 1991 model vehicles. for issues roughly related to what you described.

The other one that people talk about is a cruise control switch on the brake master cylinder that catches fire and doesn't involve rangers at all and years started in 1994 (mainly full size vehicles).. that would be a fire under the hood... usually a fuse pops before a fire will start..

yes as a mater of fact i have been through it with a customers truck,,we found that the solenoid switch caused it,somehow it stayed on or sent voltage after the key was cut off,,this is as much as we could determine,,and he had just put a solenoid on it from a parts store,,its the only thing we could see that could have possibly caused it to happen,,i own a repair shop,,and had replaced a clutch a few months before this happened,,but to this day he wont leave the battery cable on it,,when he,s not driving it,,good luck,,maybe it wont do it again,,that's what were hoping to.

If you want, you could try asking this question to the mechanics at askautopro.com as well. They seem to know everything.

Sounds scary.
