I have heard 5 explanations. None can be proven.

There is the religious context. Self explanatory.

The 2nd is that it was just that - the beginning of everything from nothing. The concept of nothing is somewhat difficult to grasp from our mind's logical perspective, but not something ruled out in science... what our mind comprehends as illogical does not necessarily make it not the case. (It is equally difficult to comprehend logically that there was no beginning.)

A 3rd is that if mass collapses fast enough in forming a black hole, the resulting compression removes the mass from 1 universe forming another. Some form of resulting back pressure as the mass collapses and expands again slightly could give birth to a new universe. Even with the current model, there has to be some expansive force to create the universe and prevent it from collapsing into a block hole at the outset. Some have even put forth the possibility that our universe is nothing more than the result of a science experment in another universe.

A 4th is that there is some undiscovered critical mass of a black hole whereby when this mass is reached the black hole is forced out of the current universe and forms another, or the black hole explodes as expands within its current universe. using this model, it is possible that this is the first time the universe is epanding continuously - it may have happened several times in the past, but in those situations the universe expansion stopped and collapsed back in on itself again.

A 5th is that our view of the formation of the universe is just wrong. the correct version has either not been discovered or was the had of God at work.

"where did that point come from"

My guess would be from another universe. There are many many universes like windows where each window gets smaller and smaller. All the mater that falls through time in one universe falls into the 4th dimension and over time, when matter is collected and critical mass is achieved it will cause a big bang and the process repeats itself. Over time I believe a black hole will gather enough material which will cause it to disconnect from our current dimension in a similar way a drop of water disconnects from a moist surface when enough water collects and causes the drip.

I would think fluid dynamics or something similar would work when dealing with time and space.

Why does something have to be created? The whole concept of nothing and everything is solely perception. When you create something, you never make it out of nothing. It all comes from components around you and formulated to whatever you might like.

Maybe the universe is the same way. There is no beginning or end, it's just one enormous moment that feels like different moments but is actually apart of one massive unit...

...abstract thinking, but with as much as we have learned, there's not much else you can do...

We don't know anything before a fraction of a fraction of a fraction of a second after the Big Bang, so that question remains unanswered even to the most expert of astrophysicists.

Perhaps God, himself is the universe... and we as humans shall neither come to know nor understand it completely. Thinking that because the Big Bang is the most widely accepted theory for the beginning of the universe, and the mere fact that we cannot even explain all of space and all of time (i.e., our universe) with it, does seem to be a little...crappy of us to say the least. Perhaps we don't have a single clue as to what we're talking about, and everything we know today as Physics is a game that God has given to us with its set of rules and regulations without so much as directions about which to start and end the game itself...

There's a bit of philosphy for you...

It need not have come from anywhere. It could simply have been.

But, I guess Hawking is speculating there exists another dimension of time that makes the singularity to be basically an arbitary matter of perspective, sort of like the North pole. You can't go more north of the North pole, but that doesn't mean there was nothing 'before' it either. 'north' is an arbitrary definition of perspective. Time might be too.

my answer to this is that it originated from a different realm of existence. a non physical one. this also corresponds with what is taught in the mystic aspects of different religions.

energy from one finally condensed enough that it separated from that realm and took off from there. that's my best guess, and it's just that.

What, do I look like God? If I could answer questions like that, I wouldn't be sitting here wasting time on Yahoo! Answers! Go ask God himself, he might know.
