How in gods name is Dick in any way a similar name to Richard?

It comes from the Middle Ages when Richard was shortened to Rick, Dick, Hick, Dicky, Ricky, and Hicky. I guess once you are at Rick all those rhyming ones just come naturally.

This is a really good question - seriously. If my name was Richard I would knock someone out for calling me "Dick." It's like an insult in disguise. Maybe someonee named Richard was being a "dick" one day so someon yelled "Hey Dick" and it just caught on from there. Could be. Have a great night & I hope you figure it out!
