cool car - no belt on this car - chain drivin - but the hydraulic chain tensioner should be replaced when you start hearing a rattle at start up. it's only about $40 and easy to install. usually around 120-150k mile mark. the chain is pretty strong - never see any problems with them and wouldn't worry.

a lot more desirable severe priced than having a set of wrenches and coaching guide to do the job your self(thinking you need to purchase the belt for as low as $60 and spend about 4 hours doing the artwork.. i know, I had the diesels and it replaced into no longer that not straightforward to do(even on the first bypass). it type of feels all the engine kinds(of all makes have an analogous set up overseas or US made) (yet overseas are a lot less of a gasoline guzzler) the large 3 can't make certain that out yet. and they get such massive pay for no longer understanding.

The '99 318ti has a chain-driven cam. The chain lasts a very long time. If it makes you feel better, replace it at 150K miles.

No belt on this baby. Don't fret -- there will be PLENTY of other things that will cost thousands of dollars to repair very soon.

Once each time prior to it breaking.

Between 60,000 and 80,000 miles. Usually you don't want to go more than 100,000 on a belt
