The main argument for graduality was that the economy was not prepared to deal with the rising costs of hiring ****** rather than having them work on the plantations for cost of room and board. The second was that the social upheavel would be monumental, many of the ****** had not been schooled, and would be unable to support themselves.

For immediate abolition was the fact that ****** were people who deserved to be treated with respect and dignity no matter the social/economic outcome. Other people did not believe the economy would be affected in the way people feared and that paying a stipend to the ****** would give them not only a way of life, but a way to educate themselves and allow them to become functioning members of society.

If done with grace and caring a gradual end could have been good because it would have given time to integrate people into society a little better and prepared them for the future, however if done incorrectly it would have created a different social class altogether adn even though they might not have been slaves there is the possiblility that they would not have been free. It would have made a dependency and a group of enablerers.

For : The slaves had no homes or education so they needed to be eased off the plantation. Needed time to regain a sense of self. Slaves had no identity and if they were thrown out they would be destitute.

Against: Seperating slaves from the masters was in the best interest for the slaves because of the treatment and living conditions. Beatings and bondage of the slaves must be stopped immentiantly. Escaping the South and fleeing to the North where they can begin establishing their own lives.

For a gradual end: If you change things like these drastically you will get adverse effects. It is better to do it gradually.

2nd: Cant really stop a thing such as slavery right away. It is a process and you should try and help people better understand why to abolish slavery before you do it.

Quick end. Slavery is wrong. People are people

2nd: stop it quickly before it became any worse
