Ships, buildings and storms WERE ALL PREVIOUSLY referred to as "she" because of their beguiling strengths (childbearing for instance) as well as a ship's ability to sustain life. However, the feminist movement has basically put an end to all that.

Besides that, so many females now have NO STRENGTHS at least in terms of relationships with men because they are totally incapable of dealing with men and the social dynamics have change so much in this country that those embellishments no longer apply.

Thanks feminists. Dealing with crazy females is GREAT. Where are all the "True Women"?

Because a ship is beautiful that is why some often name their ships after a true love it reminds them no matter how far away they still hold apart of them and it is close to their heart so that is a story why ships are referred to as "She" Because of a true love.

So Meny poems are referred to ships and a true love also

I got one

Their once was a man from....................... OK no good but when you think about someone you love it goes much smoother

When I look in you're eyes I see a thousand stars shining.

Beautiful and bright it reminds me of you're smile.

With every kiss I can feel my heart beat, only you can make me feel so complete.

With every breath I would walk a mile, for you my love it is worth the while.

When we met I will never forget, being apart of you're life is something I will never regret.

Now you are gone it is time to say goodbye, every time I think about it I can't help but cry.

Goodbye my love, you have a place in my heart and I will always hold you nearby.

As you can tell I am not good when it comes to poems but as you can see their is always a story behind it.

It's an old, old, nearly ancient tradition, honoring motherhood by naming vessels, and other things in a feminine name. "Mother Earth", etc. A female characteristic is one which "cares for", thusly an ancient boat would take care of the sailors while on their journeys. In modern times, it's kinda been twisted a little, giving female status to many different kinds of machines: cars, planes, etc. (Altho' I don't know of many tv's called "she" or "her") The ethic of strong work and devotion as a mother would do to care for her family, perhaps. Perhaps not.

Ships are referred to as women because like females they carry creatures of lesser size (like how an opposum or scorpion holds their children on its back), plus the nurturing aspects that a sailor might idiolize. it's really almost an oedipal complex, sailors become so enamored of their vessel thay associate it with other objects of affection such as a beautiful woman or their mother.

Because when men out to sea for long periods they have but one love the ship they're on. some times they get so attached to the ship they would rather sink with her than go on living.

Could be linked to classical era Athenian naval vessels with full-length wooden carvings of the goddess Athena on the front.
She was pre-dated by the Chinese and Egyptians who simply used eyes on the bow to help guide the vessel.

Other civilizations used wooden likenesses of deities, animals, birds, and serpents on the bow. Romans used fire, Vikings, dragons, etc.

May be Athena followed the civilizations mostly influenced by classical Greece through history. She may be standing in the harbor.

It's to remind you to treat your ship gently, like a lady.

sometimes a sailor will get so attached to a ship that he will think of the ship as a person

b/c men typically had ships in the old days so obviously they wouldn't want to take meticulous care of something referred to has a "he". men love women (well the majority) and beautiful things so they group them in the same category
