try changing the drive letter in the COmputer Management
it could be the letter has been reserved for a jump drive, or network drive, or backup, etc.
if it's still running the fan and your didn't drop it it's proly just some software/ os problem

It could be damaged.
Try it on another PC. If that doesn't do it, visit Maxtor's website or call them. External hard drives get bumped around a lot, and it's not uncommon for them to fail as a result.
When you go to unplug it from the PC and move it, you need to give it about 30 seconds to finish spinning down. Otherwise, there's the possibility that you will cause the head to scratch the disk or damage itself if you move it the wrong way while it's still spinning.
A lot of people, including sales reps, just don't realize how fragile they are. Even the manufacturer should do a better job warning you.

If rebooting your computer does not work, try unplugging and refreshing the drive. Then try disk warrior or something like that. If that does not work, your in trouble. Maxtor's are good, and it should work.
