What is the age someone can register for high school on their own? Without any parental involvement, not being required to live with any family members, any of that type of stuff. Just, when can a student register for school independently? I'm sure it differs from state-state, so I'm looking for Illinois...

The more information:

The person is under 18. Has not dropped out, but would be attending a different school. Would not be living alone, but not with family either. Was just wondering if this would be possible without any court involvement before age 18. They'll be 17 in a couple months.

If you are 16 or 17 you can become emancipated. An emancipated adult is a minor who is not depending on his parents anymore. This means that you take full responsibility for paying the bills, you have a place to live, etc. If you become emancipated (through the courts) then you can register on your own.

If you are under 18 then you cannot register yourself without being emancipated. There are many issues for the schools to consider such as custody issues, possible kidnapping victims, etc.

At the age of 18 you can declare independence from your parents and register yourself. The school will not contact your parents nor will they notify them of your grades, failures, etc. However... you must fill out a paper that requests this and I believe that your parents have to agree.

If you cannot do these things then you may have to just get a GED or attend an alternative/night school. If it is a public school, again you will have to have parental involvement.

In general, you can't unless you are legally declared independent.

Most school districts have to know where you live to ensure that you are entitled to their school system. In order to register, they will need proof of residency, and they are going to expect a legal guardian to provide that information.

When you turn 18, you could be considered "legally independent." However, by that time, rules regarding age are going to apply. The school district may simply tell you to get a GED.

By the way, for a minor (under the age of 18) to declare legal independence, its going to take a court order. Its very difficult for a minor to prove that they are capable of fiscal independence. This means that you have to work, pay bills, rent, etc. without aid from a family member.

I need a little more information. Did you drop out at one point and are now thinking of going back? Because if you've never dropped out, then you would already be registered. If you have, I believe that you can attend an adult high school and register yourself if you are under 18 and don't have a diploma.
