Today.... I'm sitting in Trigonometry class... now most of the students in the class are white males and to see the only African-American student there...and a female at that... is pretty rare. However, the teacher decides to single me out and ask me if I'm having trouble in the class. I just gave him a look that said, WTF and answered him, "No.".... [Which is true, I am not having trouble.] Do you all believe this is an act of racism or.... well, what WAS it?

You might be overreacting. A teacher shouldn't have to avoid you simply because you're the only black girl in his class and he doesn't want to be construed as racist. Your reaction is what makes it harder, lol. It might just be that he saw a look on your face that he misread to be frustration. Sometimes I do that with my students (regardless of sex or race), and it turns out they just had a look on their face- nothing more.

You might know better than me though. I'm not black and I'm not going to pretend to know how it feels to be black in an often racist society. I've had other teachers tell me a student is "low" when in reality he/she wasn't at all. The student just wasn't white. People DO assume stereotypes about races, even teachers.

If it's still really bothering you, talk with your teacher after class next time. Ask him if he felt like you needed more help since he singled you out to ask if you were having trouble. Tell him you thought you were doing fine but just wanted to make sure. By asking him about it, you're going to find out if there is a justifiable reason he thought you needed help. If there wasn't, HE'S going to reassess why he even asked and possibly realize he may have been acting on racist and/or stereotypical tendencies. Either way the situation will be handled. :)

It could possibly an act of racism, but then again it might have not been. It could be that you're his favorite student or something and wants you to keep up the good grades? Or could it be that he's just a freaking racist jerk? It all depends on how you look at it. But I don't think that schools will hire some racist idiot.

One more thing, were you sure your teacher was "singling" you out? Maybe he just decided to ask you because he wanted to make sure. He could've done this to many other students.

Sounds to me as if you may have been having a bad hair day girl! I wouldn't think of it as being racist, not just yet anyway. Give it time, don't jump to conclusions. You know, get over yourself! Being the minority in class, you would get to be more popular if you relax a little. Try it out and see for yourself. Make friends, not enemies. MLK would be proud of you for doing the right thing. Ok? I happen to be a white male, but I loved the work the great late Martin Luther King, and Rosa Parks for her efforts in changing things with that one bus ride, etc. I would have given anything to have had a chance to meet her before she died, but I never had the opportunity to meet her. Take a chance, fit in. Whats to be afraid of anyway?

I believe gender less than racism plays an integral role. Consider that boys at early ages are allowed or even encouraged to speak out, girls are reminded to follow the rules if they speak out, (many studies of shown this pattern). Many teachers have been made aware of those results, add to that that those years of being told to follow the rules have made women less likely to talk in class and ask questions, the teacher may want to make sure you are feeling ok, and are ok to talk about it. Maybe not the best way, but...wants to hear from you.

No, I don't think your WTF look was necessarily an act of racism. As to what it was, I guess you would know best. As to the teacher's singling you out, I can't tell whether it was an act of racism. Maybe it was, or maybe he had some other reason for asking you. Like were you looking dumb or anything like that? You're not a little bit thin-skinned, are you?

convinced they did. Crocodilians did not compete right now with dinosaurs in view that they were semi-aquatic. in reality, it is probably what saved the crocodilians even as the widespread meteor struck the earth sixty 5 million years in the past. The result threw up a lot of molten rock into the ambience, or perhaps as those rocks rained back down, they created international huge wooded area fires and oven like atmospheric temperatures. about the surely threat-free position replaced into contained in the water or underground, in view that warmth rises and in view that it takes various means to develop the temperature of water basically one degree. The dinosaurs had no the position to run or conceal and they were cooked alive with the help of the nice and cozy temperature even before nuclear iciness arrived. Many scientists trust that the dinosaurs died from starvation throughout the time of nuclear iciness, yet it is stupid, because they could no longer have survived the nice and cozy temperature. those fortunate sufficient to live to inform the tale the nice and cozy temperature may have feasted on the carcasses of the lifeless animals. The snakes developed from a lizard. in the course of the age of the dinosaurs, there have been no longer surely snakes, yet as well lizards, frogs and salamanders. those small animals spend various time underground, as did the mammals. They survived the mass extinction because warmth rises and they were threat-free underground. in view that maximum dinosaurs are great, they commonly would not be in a position to seize or eat snakes or lizards, that are too small for them to fill the tummy besides. some small dinosaurs, which incorporates Compsognathous and its relative Sinosauropteryx, may have hunted lizards and snakes, as did birds like Microraptor, Sinornithosaurus, Anchiornis, and Archaeopteryx. yet basically because there are predators does no longer propose that one of those animal can't live to inform the tale. see you later as sufficient adults live to inform the tale and reproduce, they can proceed to coexist with dinosaurs.

it was good that your teacdher was concerned, it may seem like he single you out b/c ur the only black person in the class, sometimes we as black ppl look into things too deeply. I think it was just a form of concern, i teach too and thats what i do with students that i really care about, i talk to them and see if they need any help.

definitely! i know it from experience. i am Caucasian and was studying among Asians. one of the teachers (also Asian) used to dismiss me earlier than my classmates and give them answers for upcoming exams. she always used to tell them not to mention this to me, but i found out! i still don't know why exactly she did it, but i think she wanted my classmates to do better in exams than me.
