There are scientists who think that oil is not a fossil fuel, but that it is produced by chemical reactions deep within the Earth's crust. The process is repeatable in the laboratory. But no one really knows the exact process, or how much is made in a certain time span.

All through my education in Earth Sciences and Petroleum Geology we were taught that oil and coal is derived from organic matter. And with good reason; the science just stacks up.

However, I'm always open to keeping an open mind, and some research (see source #1) shows interesting, if not conclusive research that there may be alternate oil forming mechanisms that produce non-organic derived hydrocarbons.

To answer your question though, if you want to know how 99.9% of oil discovered today was formed, then source #2 is not a bad place to start.

Oil is formed by several things, plants, tiny animals and plankton. It is formed by a gathering of these, maybe all together, maybe individually and from heat pressure and time become oil.

Diamonds are found in igneous not sedimaentary rock as mentioned above. Although the carbon came initally from the earths surface, it has been altered in the earths mantle and as such is not connected in any way from the formation of oil!

Oil can be produced in a lab from plant life, its called cooking oil for example. Its carbon based just like the oil that you out into your car but its structure is different. Also cooking/vegetable oil can be used as a source of fuel for your car.

I don't know who is trying to spin your bubble but without plants there would be no oil....During some period prior to the Jurassac, the earth was covered in essential swamp land. That decaying material is responsible for oil, coal, diamonds and a host of carbon based items we mine and dig today including oil as petroleum. Oil comes from profound decaying vegatible life, buried deep in our earth.

JUST READ THE 2nd ANSWER.....no doubt the moon is made of cheese!!!! LOL!!!!!
Oil is carbon based....REALLY carbon based....carbon base means life....plant life in fact. That BS about spontaneous oil making is so much BS!!!

Its a fact and you can bank on it!!!

No oil is made from fossils, coal is made by plants.
