It may seem like a bit of a morbid or disturbing question, but I would like to know.
When a woman has a miscarraige, do they have some special procedure for disposing of the dead baby? Or do the parents clean it off and put it in a tiny coffin? Any ideas?
Once again, I'm sorry if anyone feels offended or disturbed by this, but death is a reality, and it has to be dealt with somehow.

thanks for the correction ptmamas; I suppose by "miscarriage" I meant that the baby was born, but it comes out dead. I think "stillbirth" might be the proper term.

When early on, when a miscarriage happens, I have known women to notice the fetus (only 1-2" long) when passing it and put it in a container and take it to the dr. The dr then submits it to the pathology lab and they measure and describe it. They keep it until a certain time (each lab is different) and then it is disposed of along with all the other waste that the pathology lab recieves. If the mother comes in and is farther along and having problems and is trying to miscarry, they still send the baby to the lab. Some parents at that stage request the baby so they can have a funeral. But most of the time, they are kept for a period of time (most of the time it is weeks-to a month or so like I said above, each lab is different) and then disposed of. It is sad, but if you could see the condition of the baby, you would see it was for the best and that the baby would not be able to live anyway. I am not talking about abortion here, only natural miscarriages. Abortions, the fetus is sucked out and disposed of then and there.

I had a miscarriage at 12 weeks this past January and they put the baby in a specimen cup. I was told that they send it to the lab to do an "autopsy" of sorts to try to understand why the miscarriage happened. Then it gets disposed of as medical waste. :( Which makes me sad.
For friends who have had miscarriages of children that were further along in their pregnancy, they were given the option to have a funeral for the baby and a funeral director comes and gets the baby and it is later buried in a coffin.

When a woman has a miscarriage, the body is usually released to the family for burial. Like with any person who dies, the body is cleaned up before the family (and/or funeral home) receives it for burial.
I have a friend whose baby was stillborn at almost 9 months. They did have a service for the baby and did give her a name. Those things helped them deal with the death and even now years later, the baby can be referred to by name instead of just as an anonymous child.

If a mother gives birth to an angel, they take the baby home for a funeral.
A friend of mine recently lost her baby when she was 17 weeks along, they buried him in a tiny coffin next to other family members.

I have had three miscarriges and two required a DNC. I think that depending on how far along the pg was, it would depend. If it is early on the womens body can naturally expell it. In some cases it can not and you would have to have a DNC to remove it and in that case I would think the hospital would be responsibe. If you have the most horrible case when the fetus is older I would think that it would be up to the parents. Hope I could answer your question.

Actually if the baby is stillborn then they hospital will take care of it, but if the baby is alive and passes away after the birth then the baby is given to the family for a funeral.

Depends on how far along the fetus was.
In the case of the fetus being fully developed, the baby is delivered (or taken via surgical procedures) and usually given to the parents for burial.

My grandfather is an OB and he told me that they are sent to the morgue and a death certificate is made out for them. This even happens in abortions where the baby is past 16 weeks gestation, but they dont tell the mother that.
