I am pregnant 5 weeks along now and cant kick the smoking habbit. It is driving me insane. I am alittle worried about quitting and gaining twice the weight and also miscarrying due to the stress. I smoke about 3/4 to 1 pack a day and seem to not be able to quit the habbit. What should I do? There has to be people out there who have smoked and been through normal pregnancies? I would just like to hear the pros and cons.

I was a smoker when I got pregnant the first time. I helped myself to quit by allowing myself one cigarette each day. Eventually, I was able to do without that. My child was born very normal. Back in the days when I was having children (70's and 80's) lots of women didn't quit smoking when they were pregnant. They had normal babies and normal pregnancies, although their babies tended to be somewhat smaller and less healthy at birth.

The REAL damage is when mothers smoke around their babies and children. Secondhand smoke is a leading known cause of cancer. Children whose mothers smoke tend to have more bronchitis, asthma, and pneumonia. Now is a good time to just kick the habit. Drink lots of water and take frequent showers. That's a very good way to quit. Best of luck.

I would recommend trying to quit smoking. I wasn't able to stop smoking until I was 7 weeks along. It was really hard, but I started cutting down as soon as I found I was pregnant.

It really helps if you cut down little by little each day and change your routines so that you won't be tempted to smoke. Like instead of smoking after you eat, take a short walk. Try leaving your cigarettes at home(or only leaving 1-2 in the pack) instead of taking them with you, but make yourself not smoke at home.

I also found it helped that my husband would "watch" me, so that I wouldn't smoke when I got the urge. Try your hardest not to be tempted into buying another pack(or a pack as often). Eating helps a lot, until you are too sick to eat. Then by that time you will be too sick to smoke also(at least for me).

The biggest thing to remember though, is don't cheat! If you cheat, you'll cheat again and again. It's all worth quitting in the end, for you and your baby. Plus you'll save a lot of money from not buying a pack every day.

As for miscarrying due to the stress, it's not likely you will miscarry because of that. You can, however, add lots of stress to the baby later on in your pregnancy if you decided to quit then.
Right now would be the best and easiest time to quit smoking.
I've read that you should definitely be quit by the beginning of the second trimester.

it's not like I was a habitual smoker, but due to a harsh stress I started smoking a lot not knowing yet, that I was already pregnant. I felt nauseous after each cigarette but the urge to smoke was still there. unfortunately I realized it quite late and now, being 8 months into pregnancy I keep on thinking how my early smoking affected my baby. in first 3 months they r especially vulnerable and so many important developments happen during that period. Just quit it. Gradually, but as soon as possible. there's a bigger chance of miscarriage when u smoke rather than when u quit smoking. ur baby deserves this little effort from ur side, right?
by the way, I still feel like smoking at times, but I haven't touched a cigarette since the day I saw two stripes on my pregnancy test.

I am a smoker and I quit with my pregnancies, but my cousin had twins and she didn't stop and they are perfectly healthy 1 year olds now. Her doctor told her to cut back to under 10 a day. My mother smoked with me and all of my siblings, and I think we turned out okay, too. I answered your question about the miscarriage thing, so if you are wondering if smoking can cause a miscarriage, it can't. There are risks of birth defects and the baby having breathing problems, but they are very slim. Cut back as much as you can, try to keep it under 5 a day, if possible. Don't worry about gaining weight. You are pregnant. Enjoy being able to eat ice cream everynight and it not matter. You can worry about losing the weight when the time comes. Good luck to you again.

Miscarrying due to stress from not smoking is a myth. There are NO pros and cons to not smoking while pregnant, only pros. That little life should be motivation enough to stop smoking. Sure, there are people who have smoked throughout pregnancy and not had a problem, but are you really willing to risk it? Gaining weight should be the LEAST of your worries. Stop smoking and have yourself a beautiful, fat pregnancy!

I'm 24 weeks pregnant today. When I found out I was pregnant, I was 7 weeks. I smoked until I was 14 WEEKS!!!!! I felt so guilty every time I smoked (I did cut back big time) and finally the guilt took over and I quit. You can do it, too! trust me! I'm a SMOKER. An every day smoker, not just an occasional smoker. If I can do it, so can you! Eventually you will start feeling so bad for your poor little baby in there.

Can't never could. I'm epileptic & was told not to quit cold turkey didn't listen. Got sick, upper respirtory infection, fasted for 3-4 days (juices and water only). I not only quit a 2 pack a day habit but also coffee, tea, and carbonated drinks. That was almost seven years ago this November. It's something I've never regretted only sorry I didn't do it sooner. If you are unable to fast increase you water intake as much as possible (normal is 8-8 oz. glasses of water a day) Try to drink more because it helps to "flush" the nicotine out of your system. Caffeine is found in all of the above including cigerettes. Caffeine is not good for epileptics and not great for pregnant women. The less you have the less your baby has.

Hi,

The first thing you need to do is to stop stressing and worrying. There have been many child births while the mother has been smoking.

You should, however, continue to try to stop smoking because it is not doing anyone any good.

There are many ways to quit smoking. Different approaches work for different people.

My mother quit smoking last year after she was recommended a product by Rick Beneteau.

She gave it a try and she managed to quit smoking within one month. Our family is very proud of her because her health has greatly increased.

I'm definitely not condoning smoking while pregnant. But I smoked with my first daughter she was and still is very healthy. She weighed 7 lbs 9 oz. I'm 6 months pregnant now and still have not quit. I would like to but I'm not going to make a big deal of it, from what the doctors know as of this point and time she is healthy as well. But if you don't think you can quit, which you can if you want to, cut back by at least half and then by half again till your quit smoking or till your comfortable with how much you have cut back
