Some of the original "reality television" shows started in the 1940s, including Candid Camera, Ted Mack's Original Amateur Hour and Arthur Godfrey's Talent Scouts. By 1967, Candid Camera was still around, but the other two had faded. There were a lot of games shows. Art Linkletter had a talk show with a segment where he got kids to say "the darndest things". And there were a lot of variety shows, some of which aired live, although most of these were fairly scripted. The Gong Show took variety shows to a new level, but that was about ten years later. American Bandstand featured real kids dancing. So did Soul Train, but that was more a 70s phenomenom. That's all I can think of right now.

Candid Camera, then there was talent shows and Art Linkletter had a kids show where kids said what was on their minds. Not reality shows like today. Vietnam War was it seems always on the T.V. I was in high school in 1967, and thats what I remember well.

All In The Family was about the most "real" show then. My parents are/were exactly like Edith and Archie Bunker.

The show dealt with real issues of the day, and the writing was fabulous. Reality TV today is not real.....it is just a bunch of wanna be stars trying to get their 15 minutes of fame.
