Banana plants are immortal. Remember cultivated bananas can't produce seeds, so they are reproduced by taking a single plant and splitting it into two plants. But the old plant doesn't die. Any banana plant you see is thousands of years old.

How often they bear fruit depends on the climate and how they are managed. My banana is growing in the low tropics, and it usually bears twice a year, one around november and another around april. Most commercial plants are managed to produce just one bunch a year.

A mature banana could have one significant stalk which bears the flower, and fruit. whilst the fruit is ripe, that stalk dies. It takes an prolonged time (months) from flower to ripe bananas. you decrease that stalk down, whilst it dies, some foot above the floor. there'll already be a sparkling stalk coming as much as take it extremely is place. A mature banana could have 3-5 stalks coming up, each and each larger than the different (this twelve months, next twelve months, the twelve months after that, and so on). It in user-friendly terms blooms and bears fruit as quickly as a twelve months, in case you're fortunate.

A banana plant growths from a rhizome or corm and produce a bunch. Once is cut or mature, the plant dies. However the same rhizome produce more suckers or shoots or plants in order to produce another bunch. A plant usually takes between 7-14 months for the whole cycle.
