I have a D-Link Wireless G Router (WBR-1310). The provided software keeps giving me "incorrect router" errors, yet the CD came with the router.

Is there any alternative free wireless networking software out there that's easy to set up and would work with a D-Link router?

And yes, I called D-Link customer care but they were not able to solve the problem. I bought the router several months ago so returning it is not an option at this point.

The dlink software DOES NOT work with the dlink router. Same model, make, etc. but the dlink software says it's not compatable.

So.. the d-link web site download is not an option. The software from their site doesn't work with my d-link router. And yes, I downloaded the correct make/model.

- I have the CD. It will NOT detect the router.

- I tried the software from D-link's web site. Same error-- doesn't work.

- It's not installed on my computer so there is no IP address or dlink router control panel.

I need alternative wireless networking software OTHER than the non-working dlink software. Any suggesetions?

mosaic,
Thanks for the suggestion. I tried that, but get a 'cannot find server' error.

I am connecting to the internet via a usb cable modem. The internet connection is lost when I unplug the usb cable. It's got an ethernet cable attached to the router; and another cable going from the PC to the router. The router software has never been installed.

Try doing this if you haven't already...go to the d-link website, download the latest firmware update (read the directions and install it), and obtain the ip address of the router though their help forums, type it into the Internet explorer address bar, and make any changes you need. You actually shouldn't need the cd.

If the software from the website does not work with your model router, then they have probably replaced the firmware within the router (linksys did this without telling anyone) itself (firmware is the software on the router itslef), although you should check the links below to make sure.

I provided a link to the Manuel's, and I actually did check, they ALL have a web based configuration utility, in which you get to simply by typing the IP address of the router INTO the Internet explorer address bar, the cd is not required.

EDIT: if your getting a 'cannot find server' error, then the computer is unable to "see" the router, since you said that you couldn't install the software, AND you were using a USB cable, I assume thats the problem in itslef, try pluging your internet modem, into the router (with a cat 5 ethernet cable), and then plug the router into your system with a cat 5 ethernet cable, restart the system, router and modem, and try it.

Most home routers have a web configuration option. You can use this to enter the router configuration through a web browser without having to use the software.

Try this assuming you're running Windows XP or 2000. This will be easier if you have a network cable directly connecting your computer to the router (usually a good idea to do this at first).

1)Click the Start Menu, and select Run.
2)Type cmd and press enter.
3)At the command prompt, type:
ipconfig /all
And press enter.

Look for a line in the output that says "Default Gateway." Write down the IP address on that line (it will be four numbers separated by periods, it will probably look something like 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.100.1). Write down that address.

Then start your web browser of choice (Internet Explorer/Firefox/whatever) and type that address into it. If all goes well you should see a configuration screen for your router, and from there can set up everything else.

No. The Microsoft adaptor is the only adaptor that works. I referred to as the organisation to invite them an identical question, and that they instructed me they have a definite chip put in so as that it purely reads the Microsoft sort adaptors.
