Because if you disrespect him, he will haunt you and plunge ghostly sting ray barbs in your butt while you sleep.

Steve Irwin, whatever you think he was, touched the unused sense of adventure in millions of people on a dying planet. He did that long before the reality prop and cash shows. And he made use of what went on outside the rubber and asphalt rat race.
Perhaps you should look for the sense of adventure in yourself. If you find it, respect for Steve Irwin will come with it.
If not, consider that Irwin didn't have to hire anybody to carry his casket. Will you?

Aside from his quirkiness and that holding his baby while feeding a croc thing (what parent hasn't made a mistake or two) , he was a good man who was passionate about wildlife and sharing his passion with others. Many youngsters have been inspired by the "Crocodile Hunter", he was a well respected zoologist and a recognized expert in his field. Steve Irwin had a zest for life.
What will they say about you when you are gone?

Your question is a refreshing change of pace after seeing all this mushiness over Steve Irwin. I'm not cold hearted, but after awhile a person can only take so much of it. If you have time you might try clicking on my profile and see the first two questions I have posted in reference to Steve Irwin.

So can people believe the obnoxious crap Germaine Greer pulled? If I would ever have had a shred of respect for her it would disappear with that...researching her a bit she seems a trampy manipulative showperson who is bizarrely hypocritical. She claims she found Irwin embarrassing for Australian intellectuals like her, and that he was actually cruel to the animals he claimed to have loved and wanted to protect. But a Salon bio piece about her reveals that she believes female circumcision is fine. So apparently picking up animals to educate humans about how lovely and interesting they are and how worthy of respect they are really bugs her, but taking girls into tents and cutting out their clitorises is ...dignifying? Nasty piece of work she is...but if I disrespect her by saying so publicly at least she's alive to defend herself!
I would have asked a question about her, but I wouldn't want to grant her the attention...
so sorry to the question-asker here, but I guess you and Germaine are on the same page about Irwin and about the parameters of any sort of social coming-together. I'd love to see her defense of ritual female circumcision then, to find out if it has anything to do with community norms, lol!
I just find it in bad taste and destructive to bring up any "points" you might want to make just as he's being memorialized. What a terrible vibe...but of course respect for a person can't be forced. Respect for ettiquette and social grace can be expected, but not enforced either.

"If there’s one thing I, Steve Irwin, want to be remembered for, it’s my passion. My enthusiasm. Conservation is my life. My entire persona…" -Steve Irwin, quote taken from an episode that aired around February 2000
I'm having trouble seeing why you didn't respect him. He inspired I and millions of others across the world in countless ways. But to each his own, I suppose. You never "should" respect anyone, it should come naturally.

you are not supposed to respect a dead man for he is already nothing in this word. he is no longer existing, however you should know ab out him specially his good deeds when he was still alive. you should respect the live man if ; he has respected himself while living. respect hiom if he respect there is nothing wrong in respecting another person so so must respect his good doings and his person

Respect for the fact the people he left behind and respect for their memory of him. He was a Husband and a father and what ever you think/ thought of him, he is still Bindi's and Bobs father and they loved him dearly. Also wife Terri is taking this very hard. So if anything respect their memory.

Because we should show respect to every soul that comes into this life wether we like them particularly or not - just because they were once here in this life - & every life is precious & valuable
If not than because we are polite, respectful, compassionate, & humble

No reason. But he wasn't someone in the ranks of Bin Laden, either. Would you care if anyone respected you when you're dead? Go from there.

It's your right to do what you want; that's fine. But don't rip on others that don't think like you either. I respect anyone that preserves life and he did that. Very productive life.
