Often granulated Fuller's earth (a form of clay) is used.
Also Bentonite or Attapulgite/Montmorillonite (other names for clay) are also used.

bentonite is one of the most used products due to its absortion properties. I visited a bentonite quarry in Cyprus once, quite interesting, it needs very little refinement as its natural form is a kind of loose, grey, dried out volcanic ash. As a result of the cheap cost of extraction it is perfect for use in cheap products such as cat litter. One of the purest forms of Bentonite is Wyoming bentonite
