I have a ethernet cable running from my wireless router into it (my wireless internet connection runs without a hitch) but i am still unable to connect to the net. How do I set up my comp to go online?

It's a Linksys WRT54G. I connect my modem through ethernet into the router, then ethernet into my desktop. I'm running Win XP now.

I'm not really understanding your question...I have a ethernet cable running from my wireless router into it ... Sounds like you're running a cable from your wireless router back into itself which causes cyclic redundancies... but, since you're online at all, I'm assuming that you just misphrased that... so... I'm gonna start at the beginning, and go to where I assume you need to be...

Connect your modem by ehternet into your router at the UPLINK port. At this point, you should be able to "see" a wireless signal on your wireless pc. If you are able to access the internet at this point, we'll assume it's set up correctly. Second, connect another ethernet cable into an outgoing LAN port... skip the port directly beside the uplink port for now. It should remain open for the time being. Connect the other end of it into your PC's LAN port. If you are not able to connect to the internet, then we need to look at your settings.

On the wireless PC, click on START, then RUN... type in "CMD". Then type in "ipconfig/all" Read the settings for the wireless LAN... it should have numbers looking like this:
IP 192.168.0.2
Subnet 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.0.1
Primary DNS: 192.168.0.1

Write these numbers down. Go into your pc that is connected to the router by ethernet and go to START>CONTROL PANEL> NETWORK AND INTERNET CONNECTIONS> NETWORK CONNECTIONS. Right click on the LAN connection and choose properties. Scroll down to TCP/IP Protocol, highlight, and choose properties. Click on Manually configure , then type in the information that you wrote down, except for the top line. On that line, it should be at least 1 number higher than the wireless. It should look like this:

IP 192.168.0.5 (just to be safe)
subnet 255.255.255.0
gateway 192.168.0.1
Primary DNS 192.168.0.1

Now, if your ip address is a little different, like 192.168.1.2, or 10.44.154.2, then add at least one to the last number on the IP address, and copy everything else down EXACTLY as it says in the ipconfig from the wireless pc.

Close everything out, and you should be in MONEY. This is really not very complicated, and will be easy to follow. Good luck with it.

Neo,

I'm not sure if you're on a DSL or Cable Modem connection. Let's start from the beginning shall we?

1) Connect your modem (DSL or Cable) to your router's WAN port
2) Connect your PC to any of the router's LAN ports

If you normally use a username/password combination to access your Internet connection, you will need to set and store this information on your router (since it seems that it is not already present on the modem).

Depending on your router, follow the instructions for setting up either a Dynamic IP Address setting, or a PPPoE setting. If you add additional details about your specific setup and connection, I may be able to help you further. Good luck!

P.S. I've added two links below on how to setup your router. One link is an example of a cable broadand connection, and one is a guide on setting up if you have DSL.

Depends on a few factors.. One being the brand of the router. If its a Linksys could be something as simple like Cloning the MAC address. Need to know a little bit more info..

Once you have the router hooked up to the modem, you must make sure that you configure your Lan Connection properly. Make sure that the GATEWAY is listed as the IP from your router.

You need to connect the router directly to a computer, enter the router's ip address into the address bar of the browser, and configure your router.

Do you have a cable modem? In order to run the internet you need an ip address, a ISP (internet service provider).
