At least that's what I think it is. It is taking over our frond yard and we also have these little fern like things sprouting up all over the place. Any ideas on how to get rid of this, i know now is the time to do it. we live in zone 5. The crab grass is starting to turn.

Crabgrass is an annual so it will die in the winter leaving the seeds behind for next spring. There are many fertilizers with a crabgrass preventer in them that you put down about mid-April. This product will stop the crabgrass seed from growing--it's very effective. The Scotts produce would be Step 1 or Super Turf Builder plus Halts. Either is very good.

The fernlike things will take a broadleaf week killer. They make just the killer in granular form (the active ingredient is Trimec). Scotts is the only company I know of that has a fall fertilizer with weed killer. It's called Super Winterizer + 2. Put it down toward the end of Sept. You want to put this stuff down when the lawn is wet so the granules stick to the weeds (like in the morning while the dew is still on the ground) and when it isn't going to rain for 24 hours to give the stuff a chance to work. That should get rid of most of the weeds.

Next year after the fertilizer with crabgrass killer wait 6-7 weeks and put down a weed and feed fertilizer to finish off any of the weeds that the Winterizer didn't get. In Scotts it would be Step 2 or Super Turf Builder plus 2.

That should get you lawn into pretty good shape. Then it will be up to you to keep it that way.
